STARS OF LESSER GLORY

Im trying to discover a concept so that I might put that concept in writing, a concept that classifies and describes the man, or for that matter woman, who has found what it is to live a life consumed with honesty and vulnerability demanded by existence. One who knows the importance of life free from the horrors of rugged individualism. However, the absence of individualism is simply only one aspect of that persons character. This person is also a pietist, one who understands the power of spiritual formation and theological wisdom, yet they are a humanist in that they understand the human psyche so that they are most helpful to individuals in their present situations. Though this archetype fulfills these roles, she is not so self conceited to think that hers is the final argument for she knows that her life is formed and shaped through the very own society she wishes to understand. This human is consumed with the divine, however he understands the absolute relevance of the terrestrial, there is no dichotomy, the one is not eclipsed in the shadow of the other, the divine is the fountainhead of all earthly fulfillment. This wisdom extends itself to a world in hurt, a world needing a strong restoration, a restoration which is viewed by the ancients Oraclers of Old who looked to God for hope in restoration of life on a wholescale, from the very particles of existence to the depth of relationships formed in the webs of human intercourse. Mostly this archetype is an unrealistic, untenable, unattainable vision cast on a fallen race of humankind. A race desperately unhealthy, seeking the fulfillment that only wholeness (the Hebrew "Shalom") can provide. Though I seek a portrait of a man whose existence excels the innate humanity of men, I seek to understand and know the man who is freed from the pressures of distraction (Western Civilization's Ideal), free to cast his line into a world of wonder and contemplation. What have we been taught - Men are to be STRONG, FIGHTERS, LIBERTINES, but we only fool our already damaged egos. We are feeble, frail, prone to miscalculation, in jealous pursuit of the gains of others so that we may conquer our own ego. Women possess another mind, which I do not grasp so I hesitate to generalize their society, but I do know the temptations simply to settle in a position of co-existence is strong. A woman has the more difficult of the two, the woman is constantly marginalized by a race of dominating male-scoundrels, men obsessed with power and prestige so that we scheme to fracture the female whose mind has grasped concepts beyond our own. Women understand the power of relationship, which as a virtue turns to her vice as she seeks co-existence for the sake of the relationship. Though strong in her convictions of bonds, she cannot escape the dissatisfaction caused by her passiveness. A fighting woman is only attractive when she is fighting for the purest of motivations, the love that unites the heart of beings fraught with insecurities. Whether man or woman, this archetype will only be found when they loose all ambitions to self-fulfillment, self-attainment, or self-realization. Finally at the end of her time a myriad of Stars will admire her, Stars great and Stars small, Star bright and Stars fading, yet the name of these Stars is not given by mothers of human descent but the Father of all Brightness, they will admire her in their course set out before them, they will come and go, but life, nonetheless, will be witnessed and praised in passing of their time.

John Henry Newman sets out to defend the idea of Liberal (when I say "liberal" it is in the sense of a Liberal Arts degree)University for the training of young men. (His book is aimed at men and for the purpose of men... I dont know if the education of women at that time was still frowned upon). Within a series of nine discourses (which he initially delivered at the inaugural year of the University in Ireland)he sets out to defend his picture of what a University education should look like. Newman's arguments are logical and well defended with the arguments building, like a tower is built, upon one another. Each discourse takes up a specific thesis and is defended in the following pages. He first demonstrates that Truth is One, that is composed of one overarching, interrelated matrix. There are many systems of thought that are a play, but nonetheless, all Truth is delicately intertwined so that if you neglect one aspect of the Truth in essence you are unraveling the binds...

Kevin,                                                               At this time I believe it is necessary that I inform you of what is going on internally. As a high school boys soccer coach I learned that you want team captains who are fully dedicated to the team’s success. If they aren’t, the entire team struggles to reach its goals.  While I am part of the FBBC team, I believe I am lacking in this desired leadership quality myself.  After seven full months in my current position, I do not believe my passions are managing money for the church. As a result I do not have internal peace about the longevity of my current position. I believe there are better people for this role. I believe FBBC would be a stronger organization if a person more suited for this role were here. I c...

Pastor Or Theologian?

I received a facebook message from a long-lost college friend and roommate the other day. In his cordial greeting he noted, and correctly, that I had just graduated with a Masters in Theology. I really appreciated the recognition and congratulations, but what bothered me was his next question. He asked if I was "going to be a Pastor or a Theologian?" I laughed, not because I thought the answer to the question was obvious, but because of the fact that he dichotomized the two disciplines as mutually exclusive. My first reaction was to respond with a smart alec remark about his ignorance and misconstrued views of Christianity and its relationship to education, but then I had to stop and remember that he graduated from the same undergraduate institution which I graduated from, and probably, like me, attended a 'fundy' church growing up. Reminding myself of this context cooled me off a bit and I kindly responded that I would hope someday to do both. Nonetheless, what his ...
