not your typical fundy bible college grad

Dan MacFadyen, pastor (?), of Amplify Church in Colorado Springs, CO is getting some attention. This is crazy. I went to college with Dan MacFadyen. We were both “preacher boys” at Pensacola Christian College, an ultra-conservative fundamentalist institution training young men and woman to hold dearly to the “faith of their fathers” (independent Baptist’s) in the face of ‘secular humanism’ and ‘liberal neo-evangelicalism’ (interpret: everyone but independent Baptists who send their homeschooled children to PCC). Both are, in the mind of the institution, equally evil. Listening to Contemporary Christian Music is the beginning stage of all that is reprehensible in God’s little community behind the 8-foot gates protecting surrounding the campus. If PCC knows about what Dan is doing, I guarantee you they are praying for his “salvation” and the people he is “leading astray.”

Interestingly enough I got an email from my mother today asking me if I knew the guy. Apparently the Democrat and Chronicle, Rochester, NY’s, local paper did a brief article on the Amplify Church. My mom wrote:

“Was reading the D&C newspaper today and it had an article about a guy named Dan MacFadyen which said he had graduated from PCC about four years ago, so I am assuming that you know him! It was kind of strange for the D&C to carry this article, but it said that Dan and his wife (Sarah) were now living in Colorado Springs and started "Amplify Church" located in a bar called Thirsty Parrot, which is closed on Sunday evenings, so that's when they have their church for "real" people of "disaffected young evangelicals" who are tired of "traditional Christian rites and rituals in favor of an ultracasual atmosphere."  The church is called "Amplify" because it has "a band blasting rock music from the nightclub's main stage" and singing about Jesus. They are against "abortion and sees homosexuality as a sin, but he doesn't preach against them or emphasize topics unless the issue comes up for discussion at a service."

I certainly was surprised to see a PCC grad causing such a stir in the American evangelical community. I responded to my mother:

I knew Dan very well, actually. We graduated together. From what I remember about him, he was fairly level-headed. He wasn’t one who was drinking the PCC Kool-Aid, and he never claimed to have “caught the spirit” (PCC’s slogan), but he never demonstrated a bitter spirit toward PCC. He married Sarah, a girl, who was as “PCCish” as they come. The fact that Sarah is doing this with Dan is the more surprising of the anomalies.

What I find ironic is his disassociation with “centuries-old rituals.” I am assuming he has his Baptist heritage in mind, a tradition really only about 400 years old… Sounds like he is thinking about the Baptist church like others (ugh-hum) think about high church liturgy, etc.

My opinion: Fundamentalists teach their students to throw off “tradition, rituals, rites” and just preach the Bible. So he’s only doing what he was taught, just not in a way that would warrant their stamp of approval. What PCC really desires for their students is to adopt its views (tradition) of the Christian life and practice it their way. If their student(s) don’t they are conveniently labeled “liberal” and beat-down by the pulpiteers.

I would not necessary agree with Dan’s cavalier spirit and lone ranger mentality, but if the gospel of Jesus and his kingdom is the driving force behind his ministry, then I say let him be. If it is not of Christ, sooner or later, that will be brought to light. My speculation is that when the novelty wears off he will be left with a wide-reach but only an inch-deep. Cynicism has the best of me in these situations.

It appears Dan has adopted their philosophy, but just not their manner of living out that philosophy.

My buddy Ryan (and fellow PCC grad) read the email from my mother and responded:

Go Dan!!!  Misguided intentions, but never would have guessed it, I think he did Truth Alive?  And didn’t he marry Sarah Carpenter…Chris Carpenter’s sister, the guy that used to sing all the time?  As you might remember, Dan and I switched places when I was de-APL-ed [one way of PCC punishing you for rebellious behavior]. One side of me says, “Go Dan!” the other side says, “Dan, don’t be foolish.”

Where I certainly wouldn’t do things the way Dan is doing them, meeting in a downtown bar being one of them, I understand his motivation. After all, the Biy-ya-ble says, “don’t drink beer!”

I don't have all the answers, but I do have two cents.

My friend and fellow recovering ex-fundamentalist , I greet you joyously knowing the freedom you have found in leaving fundamentalism, however I am saddened by your departure as a whole from our Lord. I indeed understand the hardship which you have faced is cause for questioning God’s existence, faithfulness, and love to his creation. I would like to respond to you because I feel like I understand your socio-religious background. Let me first tell you my goal is not to re-convert you, but rather to give you a second thought from one who grew up in similar roots, whose posture of faith remains bent toward the gospel. I also grew up in ultra-conservative fundamentalism. If names like Peter Ruckman, Jack Hyles, Arlin Horton, etc, mean anything to you than you will understand. I graduated from PCC. OMG. I cannot believe it, but it’s true. What a crazy place. Fear, guilt, shame, legalism were the name of the game! As long as you “caught the spirit” all of life would be good and God would b...

A response to my beloved mother: part 2

READ THIS POST FIRST MY MOTHER : "I'm a registered Conservative, but my vote counted since they endorsed McCain, so I guess it all depends on who the Libertarian's endorse, and even if it were someone difference, at least you would have had a part in voting for the "most" righteous candidate, and McCain was the one even though he's still not the Christian ideal! Remember, Bill Clinton was a "pro-choice" candidate as well as one who furthered the homosexual agenda, so it wasn't surprising to me that 9/11 happened after his term was up and it's not surprising that the economy is faltering so badly now, and it won't surprise me if Obama continues the downward spiral, even if it is into socialistic policies since that's how Europe has gone since they left off looking to God. It doesn't matter what the rest of the world is doing since the majority have been anti-God for so long and their nations have paid for that for centuries (Dark...
These are lines from Goethe's Faust : (A young moldable student approached Dr. Faust to learn to speak well) Wagner: Forgive me, But I thought you were declaiming. Been reciting some Greek tragedy, no doubt; I wish to improve myself in this same art; 'Tis a most useful one. I've heard it said, An actor might give lessons to a priest. Faust: Yes! when your priest's an actor, as may happen. Wagner: Oh! if a man shuts himself up forever in his dull study; if one sees the world never, unless on some chance holyday, looks at it from a distance, through a telescope, how can we learn to sway the minds of men by eloquence? to rule them, or persuade? Faust: If feeling does not prompt, in vain you strive, If from the soul the language does not come, but its own impulse, to impel the hearts of hearers, with communicated power, in vain you strive -- in vain you study earnestly. Toil on forever; piece together fragments; Cook up your broken scraps of sentences, and blow, with ...
